American Roots

The Nederlands Blazers Ensemble (NBE) recently explored the depths of the rich tapestry of American music with their concert, “American Roots.” This performance featured Native American singer Charly Lowry, a member of the Tuscarora Indian Nation, who infused the event with her profound cultural insights. The central theme celebrated the deep connection between humanity and nature, encapsulated in the phrase, “We are the land,” which embodies the essence of Native American beliefs.

A significant highlight of the concert was the adaptation of Philip Glass’s renowned score for the film “Koyaanisqatsi.” This piece reflects on the complex relationship between humans, nature, and technology, seamlessly integrating with the varied musical elements presented, creating an evocative soundscape that resonated with the concert’s themes.

Visual projections by artist Vincent Rang added depth to the performance, enhancing the overall experience for attendees. Before the concert, historian Manon Portos Minetti delivered a talk providing valuable context on American history, particularly focusing on colonial violence and the heritage of Native Americans. This concert served as a profound exploration of cultural roots, uniting diverse musical traditions and celebrating the beauty of Native American music.
